Statement
Conveying the sense of seeking the
intangible and unattainable, a finely articulated game
of belief construction is portrayed. Uncanny figures are
seen transcending the everyday - engaging in ephemeral
moments of magic, madness or miracle as they try to fill
an unnamed loss.
Linda Lencovic
Selecting found images from photographs
and videos Linda Lencovic presents figures that are in
turn un-nerving and absurd, captured in the midst of performing
enigmatic acts. Seeking the intangible they reveal uncanny
instants of trying to connect to something larger than
the day to day.
Working with carefully chosen snapshots
of moments that can be read in both positive and negative
ways, Lencovic requires the viewer to either accept the
tensions exposed in the ambiguous moment, or choose their
own interpretation.
These tensions are mirrored in shimmering,
thin layers of lacquer-like oil, which simultaneously
push back reality while representing it; ghostly shapes
are both painted on and revealed through numerous layers
and techniques which remove the paint and allow previous
layers, and the plain white gesso of the board, to shine
through.
In these works Lencovic weaves a luminous
spell, compelling the viewer into a miraculous, often
absurd dark world.
